Volunteer opportunities at CADAS

Volunteer Receptionist

Do you believe that everyone can change their lives for the better with the right support? Cadas are looking for ‘people – people’ to work with sensitive, non-judgmental attitudes, and the ability to respect client confidentiality. The role is Volunteer Countywide Receptionist, working from our Carlisle office, Monday to Thursday mornings. Our Reception line is quiet but we need someone who can take calls from professionals, the general public, and potential clients to point them in the right direction when staff is unavailable. The role would suit someone who has other desk-based work they could bring in to complete when the phone isn’t ringing. Our Reception is open 10 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday, and we are looking for anyone who can offer anything from half a day a week upwards.

cleaner needed

Office Cleaner

We are looking for cheerful people who support what we do as a charity, have compassion for our clients and who are happy to take responsibility for the cleanliness of the CADAS offices. The role is to complete basic cleaning work during office hours (any time between 10 and 4, Monday to Thursday by arrangement), totalling no more than half a day a week. There are two toilets and one tiny kitchen sink area to keep clean, bins to empty and carpets to vacuum over a handful of offices and meeting rooms. Cleaning supplies provided as well as cups of tea and friendly chit-chat!

Walk Leader

We are looking for volunteers with an enjoyment of the outdoors to lead short, urban walks in different towns around Cumbria for people in recovery from harmful drug or alcohol use. You must have a desire to support vulnerable people and a compassionate attitude as our clients are looking for a non-judgmental environment in which to boost their wellbeing through connecting with others, gentle exercise and mindfully enjoying the outdoors. Ideally, we would like at least an hour’s availability on a regular basis in a particular location (eg for weekly or fortnightly lunchtime walks in Penrith, lasting for 45 minutes). Full training will be provided by Active Cumbria and can be done anywhere in the county.

Volunteer roles available

Office Admin Volunteer

We’re looking for someone who has a desire to work with vulnerable people, with a compassionate, non-judgmental attitude to support us in one of our regional offices. We’re asking for no more than half a day once a week to help out with any kind of office admin task that needs doing. Many tasks will involve using a computer but full training will be given as necessary, using the standard Microsoft Office/365 suite of programs. There may be some tasks which could be taken home or even done completely from home, but anything relating to a confidential client or staff information would have to be done in the offices.

Business Breakfast Networker for CADAS

Do you have a desire to support the work of CADAS and enjoy meeting new people? Then we may be looking for you!

The role is to represent CADAS at online breakfast networking meetings for businesses in North Cumbria, between 6.45am and 8.30am, on occasional Fridays.

Volunteers would be invited to attend the online meeting with a member of staff on the first occasion, to see how the highly-structured agenda works and how members are asked to contribute, and then asked to step in occasionally when staff cannot cover one of the (weekly) meetings. When doing this, you would be provided with a short (one-minute) script to read out about CADAS’ work and the help we need from the business community. You would also have a brief opportunity at the end of the meeting to promote your own business to the local community. Meetings are friendly and would be interesting if you are curious about local businesses and developments in the local business environment.

If any of the roles are of interest, please contact our Volunteer Co-ordinator Lois on 0300 111 4002 or

You bet there’s help for gamblers… and for those whose lives they wager

What’s an odds-on safe bet to say about gambling? That it makes rich bookies richer, and poor punters poorer? Definitely. That it makes victims of partners, family, friends, and colleagues? Definitely. That effective, confidential help is freely available to gamblers and their victims? Definitely again. CADAS volunteer Steve Russell discovers some of the many agencies… Continue Reading

How do we use your donations?

This is a question that is asked a lot to charities. Did you know that we need to bring approximately £10,000 per week to continue operating? We currently operate out of our four centres in Carlisle, Kendal, Workington and Barrow, as well as other local hubs, such as GP surgeries and libraries. This approach helps… Continue Reading
