Since October 2021, CADAS have been trialling a project that aims to better understand the needs of people using Image and Performance-Enhancing Drugs, through providing safe needle disposal in their local communities.
‘Be Sharp Smart’ helps people to obtain free, clean, medical-grade sharps and provides a place where used needles can be safely disposed of. Callers are also given information about how to use IPEDs safely and have the opportunity to talk to a CADAS professional about any issues they are concerned about.
Up until now, there have been no facilities for disposing of used needles from IPED use safely in Cumbria since 2010.
IPEDs can include drugs such as anabolic steroids, fat burners, growth hormone and peptides – often referred to as steroids, roids, juice, or gear – and they are more prevalent than ever in certain areas of the community but usage is often well hidden.
Project lead Rich says: “I’m pleased with the progress we’re making across Cumbria, but there are still many people out there who may need our help and support. We really want to take away any stigma or judgement that IPED users may feel, and provide a safe and non-judgmental space where people can find the support they need”.
“People in this county are using steroids or other IPEDs and many have fears and anxiety about their use. We want to help talk through those fears and make sure that people are safe and knowledgeable about what they’re doing.”
This pilot scheme is being funded by Cumbria County Council. Users can contact Rich for a code to use on the website www.exchangesupplies.org which will allow them to order free medical grade sharps and get some harm reduction advice.
If you would like any more information on this project, or want to speak to someone in the strictest of confidence about you or someone you know and their IPED usage, please call Rich C on 0300 111 4002 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
