In March, the CADAS staff team attended a virtual training session about Gender Identity with Matt from Gender-Ed Training & Consultancy Ltd. We all learned a lot and will be using that knowledge to support clients and their friends and families in future.
The course covered a basic understanding of terminology around gender diversity, an awareness of how mental health is impacted and changes throughout transitioning. We also discussed supporting service users with coming out and sharing their stories and supporting relationships. A big part of the course was around understanding substance misuse within the context of queer culture and the role that media plays within that.
Matt also touched on transition pathways and how to support someone to gain help via the NHS as well as how to promote inclusion with our service. He also gave us a stack of useful links to share with clients and anyone ringing the Helpline.
