To celebrate our 40th anniversary, the CADAS ‘Horrible History’ elves have looked into the boozy heritage of Cumbria, from the huge number of pubs that one graced the streets of Barrow to the Whitehaven Rum Story.
For example, did you know that Carlisle munitions workers used to get so drunk that in 1916 the Government took over the running of over 300 pubs to try and control the problem. It was seen as a real threat to the war effort!
We were so interested by what we found that we thought we’d share. We’ve created a one-hour session pack aimed at Years 7/8 (session plan, teacher notes and resources) in line with the school curriculum that we’d be delighted to send to you.
